TEASER
FADE IN.
INT. GABRIELLA'S SHOP - SALES FLOOR - DAY
Open on a shot looking directly at the sales counter.
GABRIELLA is standing at the register rapping her fingers on
it. She blows a loose strand of hair out of her face.
CONNOR is working on a laptop on the other end of the
counter.
LESI is napping in her cage in the middle of the opening in
the center of the counter.
They are the only three souls (no pun intended) in the shop.
Connor's typing is the only audible sound.
Pull back and PAN UP to the large banner that says 'Grand Re
Opening' hanging from the rafters.
The small bell over the front door RINGS as KAIA enters the
store, startling everyone.
Lesi instantly starts barking until Gabriella grunts at her
and points her finger down. Lesi whimpers and lies down.
KAIA
(squinting at the banner)
So...when's the big day?
CONNOR
Yesterday.
GABRIELLA
Yesterday.
Kaia looks around the room, noticing the distinct lack of
customers.
KAIA
(surprised)
Oh!
(beat; low)
Oh.
She smiles nervously and scratches the back of her neck.
KAIA
Well, umm, I'm sure things will
pick up.
CONNOR
It's not as bad as it looks. We had
someone here earlier.
Gabriella looks to Connor with a disgusted expression.
GABRIELLA
That was the mailman, Connor.
CONNOR
(shrugs)
Least he knew where the place was.
Gabriella scoffs and walks out from behind the counter.
KAIA
So where'd you need me to take you?
GABRIELLA
(picking up her purse)
Friend of mine called about an hour
ago and said she had a rare find
for me.
Gabriella heads for the door. Kaia turns and follows her.
KAIA
She say what it was?
GABRIELLA
Nope.
Connor looks up from the laptop and calls out to the girls.
CONNOR
(wry)
Hey, don't worry about the store.
I'm sure I can handle the rush.
GABRIELLA
(rolls eyes)
Just make sure you walk Lesi.
CONNOR
Yeah, sure. Hey, do we have an 'Out
To Lunch' sign? I don't want our
wave of customers thinking we're
closed.
Gabriella flings the door open and exits. Kaia throws Connor
a dirty look. He just shrugs nonchalantly and goes back to
his work.
EXT. APARTMENT COMPLEX - DAY
Establishing shot of a nondescript apartment building,
hovering more towards Gabriella's condominium than Pike's
dilapidated building in terms of class.
INT. APARTMENT - 3RD FLOOR HALLWAY - NEXT
Kaia and Gabriella round a corner at the far end of the hall
in mid conversation. Well, more like Kaia in mid rant.
KAIA
So he sends me a text message
apologizing when I'd already been
there a friggin' hour!
GABRIELLA
(disgusted)
He didn't even call you?
(shakes her head)
I like Pike and all, but you sure
you want to get back with him?
KAIA
At least the text was more direct
than all the mixed messages he's
been sending lately.
(sighs)
So's how life with the big ass?
Gabriella freezes and throws an offended look to Kaia before
craning her neck around to look at her rear end.
KAIA
(rolls her eyes)
I meant Connor.
GABRIELLA
Oh.
(beat)
Can we talk about something else?
KAIA
I just don't get how you put up
with him. He's been a such jerk
with the no soul and all. Can't
imagine actually living with him.
GABRIELLA
(shrugs)
It was my choice to save him,
however I needed to. So I have to
live with that.
KAIA
Still doesn't give him a right to
be saying-
GABRIELLA
Kaia, I get you're not Connor's
biggest fan at the moment, but he
is what he is. And as messed up at
this sounds, I'd rather have a
slightly edgier Connor than not
have him around at all. He's-
KAIA
("heard this before")
-too important to the world. So
you've said. Over and over and over
again.
Both of them sigh. Apparently this conversation's happened
before. Gabriella stops at a door and gently KNOCKS on it.
GABRIELLA
Thanks for the lift. I swear I'm
gonna get another car soon.
KAIA
No, it's okay. You're still
mourning your loss.
There's no answer at the door. Gabriella frowns and knocks
again.
GABRIELLA
Well, it's hard explaining a
helicopter crashing into your old
car, especially when they already
cleaned up the wreckage before
you...
She trails off, noticing there's still no answer at the door.
GABRIELLA
(confused)
She told me she'd be here.
(knocks again)
Will? You home?
KAIA
Will? Thought you said this was a
girl.
GABRIELLA
Wilhelmina. She goes by Will.
KAIA
(nods)
Oh.
Kaia takes a quick whiff and her face tightens. She looks
down the hall in both directions, checking for other people.
KAIA
Gab, blow the door off.
GABRIELLA
What?
KAIA
I smell blood.
(beat)
And something else.
Gabriella takes a step back and:
INT. WILHELMINA'S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - NEXT
ON the front door. A loud BANG precedes the door falling
right off its hinges. It falls to the ground and the girls
walk in.
The place has been turned upside down. The small coffee table
is in pieces on the floor. The entertainment center is tipped
over. The floor itself is barely visible under the pile of
debris scattered all over the place.
GABRIELLA
(frantic)
Oh God, Will? Will, are you-
Kaia grabs Gabriella's arm and pulls her towards the couch in
front of them. A slender arm extends from behind it.
Gabriella drops to her knees and Kaia yanks her jacket off.
CUT TO a shot behind the couch just as Kaia covers up the
exposed chest of a white haired woman in her mid forties.
This is WILHELMINA.
She looks like she took quite a beating. Her ripped, tattered
shirt is off to the side. She has bruises and small BITE
MARKS all over her arms and shoulders.
Kaia and Gabriella are looking her over, taking in the extent
of the damage.
KAIA
Do you think she was raped?
GABRIELLA
(worried)
I...I don't know. She-
Gabriella gently turns her over and GASPS, covering her
mouth.
A large, bright red BURN is at the base of her neck, roughly
the size of a human fist. It's shaped like an ancient glyph,
the kind seen on old scrolls.
GABRIELLA
(shakes her head)
Can't be.
KAIA
(looking at the mark)
Can't be what?
(turns to Gabriella)
Gabriella?
PUSH IN on Gabriella's face.
KAIA
Gabriella, what is it?
Gabriella's too shocked to answer.
BLACK OUT.
END OF TEASER
ACT ONE
FADE IN.
INT. WILHEMINA'S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - RESUME
Back in Wilhelmina's living room, where Gabriella stands up
from behind the couch, stepping back towards the middle of
the room.
KAIA
Gab-
She stops as Gabriella's PDA rings.
Gabriella pulls it out and looks at the display. It just says
'Pike'.
GABRIELLA
Not now, Pike.
She clicks it on, then immediately off again, and then on
again to dial 911.
OPERATOR (O.S.)
(through phone)
Nine-one-one, please state the
nature of your emergency.
GABRIELLA
Hello? My friend is injured. I need
an ambulance at...
FADE TO:
EXT. CITY STREETS - NEXT
Lesi is practically pulling Connor down the street, her tail
wagging excitedly as she marches forward.
Connor looks bored as hell, though, and isn't really paying
attention to anything going on around him.
He's so out of it, he doesn't even notice a kid on a
skateboard, until they SLAM into each other, the kid almost
knocking Connor off his feet!
Connor regains his balance, and raises his fist to strike,
but the kid grabs his skateboard and runs off in a panic.
Connor scoffs, and starts to walk again, but stops as a look
of realization crosses his face.
He looks down, and both his hands are empty.
He looks all around him, and sees Lesi's leash disappear
around the corner.
CONNOR
(bitter)
Great.
He rolls his eyes and runs after her, skirting around the
corner, into:
EXT. ALLEYWAY - NEXT
Connor slows down as he sees Lesi standing at the other end
of a dirty, run-down alley, barking at a squirrel that is
trying to climb up a fire escape on the back of an apartment
building.
Connor walks towards her, but before he even manages to make
a few feet, a loud EXPLOSION sends him flying forwards, head
over heels, until he lands flat on his back.
He wastes no time in getting to his feet, looking around for
where the blast came from.
Outside the alley and across the street, we can just barely
make out a FIGURE on the rooftop of an apartment building.
Connor jumps to his feet, and runs towards the street.
EXT. ROOFTOPS - NEXT
ON THE FIGURE: He's a muscular, scruffy, twenty-something man
with red hair, wearing combat pants, a flak jacket, and a
headset. He's also holding a VERY large gun. We'll call him
THE HUNTER.
He aims his weapon at Connor, who's running out of the alley
and into the street. He FIRES, and another EXPLOSION takes
out a large chunk of street, and BLOWS UP A CAR.
He keeps his gun pointing forward, ready to take another
shot, but when the dust clears, Connor is gone!
He scowls, and presses a button on the side of his headset,
speaking into the mic:
HUNTER
Target acquired. Moving to pursue.
A voice crackles in over the headset, heavily distorted; we
can't even tell if it's male or female.
VOICE (O.S.)
(filtered, through
headset)
Copy that. Careful not to hurt any
of the bystanders.
The Hunter makes a running leap, easily clearing the gap
between buildings, landing on another apartment complex.
HUNTER
(sarcastically)
You want me to kill him or not?
VOICE (O.S.)
I want you to kill him following my
rules.
The Hunter jumps down to a one story store rooftop, then
drops down into:
EXT. ANOTHER ALLEY - NEXT
Another alleyway. He starts walking towards the street he
just fired on.
HUNTER
(grinning)
What's that?
(makes faux static noise)
Not getting much of a signal back
here.
VOICE (O.S.)
Cut the crap and finish the job!
The Hunter sighs.
HUNTER
Got it.
He continues walking.
INT. SEWERS - NEXT
Connor is running down a sewer pipe, gasping for breath.
He stops, pulling out his cell phone, and rapidly dial a
number.
He holds the phone up to his ear, but after a few seconds,
pulls it away to look at the screen.
CONNOR
No signal. Perfect.
He tucks the phone away, and starts running again.
INT. HOSPITAL - HALLWAY - NEXT
Inside an average looking, busy hospital, Wilhelmina is being
pushed down a hallway on a stretcher by two PARAMEDICS (one
male, one female).
Gabriella, Kaia, and a DOCTOR are running along side them.
DOCTOR
Victim's heart rate is steady.
Third degree burns on her back.
GABRIELLA
We found her in her apartment. I
don't... I don't know what caused
the burns.
DOCTOR
Some kind of narrowly focused heat.
A fine welding torch, maybe.
A look of guilt flashes across Gabriella's face.
MALE PARAMEDIC
She's been breathing the entire
time, but we can't rouse her.
KAIA
Is she in shock? Will she be
alright?
FEMALE PARAMEDIC
It's probably shock, yes.
Gabriella's PDA rings, and she pulls it out to look at it,
but tucks it away after looking at the display.
KAIA
Was that Pike again?
GABRIELLA
Yeah.
As they pass an occupied room, however, we see a frustrated
PIKE hanging up his cell phone.
He turns, and scrambles out into the hall, grabbing
Gabriella's shoulder.
PIKE
Hey!
Gabriella spins around, surprised.
GABRIELLA
Pike!?
KAIA
(sarcastic)
Hooray.
Gabriella hesitates for a moment, then turns around and
follows her friend.
GABRIELLA
Whatever it is, it'll have to wait.
My friend is hurt, Pike.
PIKE
Whoa, hold on-!
He almost trips over his own feet as he tries to stay with
her.
PIKE
Look, there's something here I need
you to take a look at, cause I
don't-
GABRIELLA
It'll wait!
PIKE
Why, what's happened?
GABRIELLA
Will... my friend, she's been
attacked. I'm not sure if the mark
they made on her is what I think it
is, and I really hope it isn't, but-
PIKE
Mark? Elaborate, kinda rune-ish?
KAIA
(brisk)
Not now, Pike.
GABRIELLA
(surprised)
Uh, yeah, actually.
PIKE
Okay, you really need to see what's
going on with-
GABRIELLA
No! I'm not leaving Will by
herself!
KAIA
I'll stay with her.
(off Gabriella's look)
Gab, if he thinks whatever it is is
this damn important, you better go
see.
(beat)
I'll come get you when she wakes
up.
Gabriella sighs.
GABRIELLA
Fine.
CUT TO:
INT. SEWERS - NEXT
Connor is still running through the sewers, eyes focused
ahead.
He stops, hearing something, then leaps upward as another
EXPLOSION blows a chunk out of the sewer pipe right where
Connor was standing.
The Hunter walks into frame, looking from side to side, then
up...
As Connor drops down RIGHT ON TOP OF HIM, knocking the gun
away!
Connor throws a right hook, and as it connects, we
CUT TO:
INT. HOSPITAL - ROOM 201 - NEXT
Pike leads Gabriella into the room he was just in, where
three young-looking women are resting in hospital beds. A
Caucasian blonde, Caucasian brunette, and brown haired Asian.
All three have long hair, and quite beautiful. These are the
TRANSUDING FURIES.
They're all awake and look a little green in the gills.
BLONDE FURY
(to Gabriella)
I... we knew you-
ASIAN FURY
-would come. Or at least-
BRUNETTE FURY
-we did. Not anymore.
Every word seems to be causing them physical pain. The
morphine drips running into each of them don't seem to be
helping.
GABRIELLA
Who did this to you?
BLONDE FURY
We did-
ASIAN FURY
-not know-
BRUNETTE FURY
-his face.
They all simultaneously moan in pain.
GABRIELLA
Wha... what did he do to you?
BLONDE FURY
He branded us-
ASIAN FURY
-with the Mark-
BRUNETTE FURY
-of Saa.
Gabriella's face drops even further than it was. Pike quietly
pulls Gabriella out of the room.
INT. HOSPITAL - HALLWAY - NEXT
Gabriella shakes her head in disbelief, and shivers a bit.
PIKE
I don't have a clue what they was
talking about.
GABRIELLA
Bite marks. Did they have bite
marks on them?
PIKE
Yeah.
(off Gabriella's worried
look)
Same as your friend, I take it?
GABRIELLA
(swallows)
Yeah. But...
PIKE
What's the 'Mark of Saa'?
GABRIELLA
It's... it's a myth, or, I thought
it...
She shakes her head, trying to clear it.
GABRIELLA
I need to make a phone call.
She abruptly turns and walks down the hallway, pulling out
her cell phone.
INT. SEWERS - NEXT
Connor and the Hunter are going at it, exchanging blows.
Connor tries a jab to the Hunter's stomach, but the Hunter
grabs his wrist and THROWS Connor into the wall, cracking the
concrete.
Connor shakes his head, and tries to kick the Hunter in the
face, but the Hunter dodges and slaps Connor's leg aside,
knocking Connor off his feet.
The Hunter then runs for his gun, grabs it, and takes aim,
but Connor's already gone.
He holds for a second, then sniffs the air. He runs down the
tunnel a few feet, then looks to his left, where we see a
small, person-sized hole, not man-made, leading to a dark
tunnel that goes up.
The Hunter narrows his eyes, then heads down the sewer again.
INT. SUBWAY STATION - MAIN PLATFORM - NEXT
Inside a fairly empty subway station, Connor runs into frame,
frantically looking from side to side. He spots the train,
which is just pulling away.
He runs, and grabs the fourth car, before it picks up too
much speed. The train pulls him along for a bit, as he
struggles to open a window. He finally manages to do so, and
climbs into:
INT. SUBWAY CAR - NEXT
Connor falls down into an empty seat. He looks around, but no
one noticed his arrival.
He sighs in relief, then pulls out his cell phone.
CUT TO:
INT. HOSPITAL - HALLWAY - NEXT
Pike is waiting in the hall by himself; Gabriella is at the
other end, frantically talking into her cell phone, although
we can't hear her.
Pike phone rings, and he picks it up.
PIKE
Hello?
INTERCUT WITH: INT. SUBWAY CAR
CONNOR
Pike!
Pike yanks the phone away from his ear. On his end of the
conversation, Connor's voice is filled with static.
PIKE
Connor, I can barely hear you. Are
you in a tunnel or something?
CONNOR
Sewers, then subway. Some nut just
tried to shoot me.
PIKE
What?
CONNOR
I said: Some wacko just tried to
shoot me! Get your ass down here
and give me a hand with him!
PIKE
I... yeah, alright, where?
CONNOR
Station 32. I'll be there in ten
minutes.
PIKE
I'll be there in five.
END INTERCUT
Pike tucks his cell phone away, grimacing at the bad
reception.
INT. SUBWAY CAR - NEXT
Connor sits back, relaxing.
After a few seconds, a muffled THUMP is heard. Connor snaps
his head up and waits, but nothing happens...
...until a small BLADE pokes through the roof of the train,
right in front of Connor, and quickly traces a large circle.
A boot KICKS the inside of the circle through, and the Hunter
drops into frame, bringing his gun up to aim at Connor.
Connor kicks out, knocking the gun aside, but the Hunter
flicks his other wrist, and a small knife slips into his
palm, which he swings at Connor, who manages to roll aside.
Connor stands up and rushes at the Hunter, getting in close
to avoid being shot.
He manages to grab the barrel of the gun, and point it
towards the door leading to the car ahead of them, just as a
middle-aged man in a suit comes into the car!
HUNTER
No!
Hunter swings his gun around, pointing it at the car behind
them, and it FIRES, blasting the door clean off.
CLOSE UP on the latch connecting the two cars. It's hanging
on by a few scraps of metal, and the link is getting worse.
BACK TO Connor and the Hunter, as the former KICKS the latter
in the groin, then THROWS him through what was once the door
leading into the rear car.
The impact snaps the latch, and the car behind starts to slow
down.
Connor looks back, ready to jump, but as Hunter gets to his
feet, he doesn't pull the gun up, instead throwing Connor an
angry look as he drifts out of sight.
As soon as he's gone, Connor turns around to see the man in
the suit desperately trying to open the door. Connor sneers
at him, then pushes him aside and opens the door for himself,
making sure to close it behind him.
INT. HOSPITAL - HALLWAY - NEXT
Gabriella walks back over to Pike. Both of them look very
disturbed.
PIKE
You find out what you needed to
know?
GABRIELLA
There's been attacks like this all
over town. Someone is doing this
to... to anyone everyone connected
magic.
PIKE
Probably explains Connor's
predicament. He was attacked too.
GABRIELLA
Huh?
PIKE
All he said was that someone tried
to shoot him. I gotta go pick him
up.
GABRIELLA
Oh, God, is he alright? Maybe I
should-
PIKE
(interrupting)
Seemed fine on the phone. You stay
here, I'll go.
GABRIELLA
Are you sure? If it's related, you
two won't stand a chance.
PIKE
No, you stay here with your friend
and figure out what the hell this
is all about.
GABRIELLA
(reluctantly)
Alright. Thank you.
Kaia comes out of a room from down the hall, and walks down
to where Pike and Gab are standing.
KAIA
Gab, she's awake.
Gabriella nods, and heads down the hall and into Will's room.
Kaia and Pike look away from each other.
KAIA
Oliver.
PIKE
Hey.
After a few seconds, Pike swiftly turns and walks away,
leaving Kaia alone.
