EXT. CITY STREET - NIGHT
Back to Kaia's car, only now the camera is on the passenger
side looking at Spike, who is still staring out of his
window.
SPIKE
(grim)
Then everything was black. Then I
was here.
(beat; clears his throat)
Wasn't such a bad way to go. I've
been burned from the inside out and
that hurt a hell of a lot more.
Kaia, in the background, looks horrified.
KAIA
God.
SPIKE
(solemn)
He wasn't there that night.
Kaia turns her eyes back to the road and pulls off down a
side street.
Spike keeps his eyes out the window, still remembering that
night. Out of the blue, he perks off and points off to the
side.
SPIKE
Mind pulling over? Need to do a
spot of shopping.
KAIA
Shopping?
SPIKE
Pardon. I meant shoplifting.
A solemn Kaia obliges, more out of pity than anything.
Spike is out the door in a second. He turns back and leans
his head into the window.
SPIKE
Be just a second.
Kaia watches as Spike checks to see if anyone's around. Then
he goes around the side of a small shop.
INT. CEDAR SINAI HOSPITAL - MAIN RECEPTION AREA - NIGHT
Janitors and police officers litter the area, cleaning up the
aftermath of what had to have been a riot.
A lone figure in a grey hoodie, his head hidden under the
drawn hood, maneuvers through the crowd to the desk. His back
is to the camera, preventing a look at his face. He's also
wearing a familiar bookbag.
He stops to cough, almost hacking up a whole lung, before he
finishes his trip to the front desk.
A blonde NURSE looks up at the new arrival and puts on her
best fake smile.
NURSE
Yes, sir, how may I help you?
REVERSE ANGLE to reveal Donovan standing at the desk. He
looks like he's aged at least forty years, his blonde hair a
matted grey and skin wrinkled up like a prune.
DONOVAN
(hoarse)
I'm here to see Dr. Robert Packer.
NURSE
I'm sorry, sir, but none of the
doctors are available at the
moment. We're in the middle of a
massive clean up and reorganization
after the-
Donovan slaps his hands down on the desk, startling the nurse
and shutting her up.
DONOVAN
I don't think you understand.
He stops to cough again, that lung getting ever so close to
coming out.
DONOVAN
I need to see him. I called ahead
and-
DR. ROBERT PACKER, a clean cut, dark haired man wearing
doctor's scrubs comes up and taps Donovan's shoulder.
PACKER
(to the nurse)
It's alright. He had an
appointment.
The nurse nods and goes back to her work while Dr. Packer
leads Donovan away.
PACKER
(sadly)
Donovan, you look worse every time
I see you.
DONOVAN
Maybe if you wouldn't be so
hesitant, I wouldn't be in such
dire straits every time.
Donovan coughs again. Dr. Packer slowly steps away from him
as they continue walking.
INT. CEDAR SINAI HOSPITAL - STORAGE CLOSET - NE
Pan across several aisles of medical supplies until we reach
Pike standing in the middle of one, dropping a box into a
small bag slung across his shoulder and chest.
He pulls a small piece of paper out of his pocket.
PIKE
(scans with his finger)
Morphine.
(makes a check motion)
Check.
(scans again; frowns)
Suppository? I don't even wanna
know.
He walks further down the aisle (towards the camera)
searching for the next item.
PIKE
(grabs a bag)
There we are.
He checks his list again and sighs.
PIKE
At least she didn't put tampons on
the list.
(beat; sighs)
I stand corrected.
He drops another box into his bag.
INT. CEDAR SINAI HOSPITAL - HALLWAY
Dr. Packer and Donovan walk down an isolated hall.
PACKER
(in a harsh whisper)
God help me, Donovan, I can't keep
doing this for you.
They stop walking. Packer points to a set of double doors at
the far end of the hall.
PACKER
I just cleared all the personnel
out of the secure ward of ICU.
Go to the second recovery room on
the left. Third bed. There's a
black man about my age on life
support.
Donovan nods as he pulls his bag around to his chest and digs
through the front compartment.
DONOVAN
God bless you.
PACKER
(shakes his head, bitter)
I don't think that'll be happening
anytime soon.
Donovan produces a plain letter envelope.
DONOVAN
(smug)
As promised, your thirty pieces of
silver.
Dr. Packer snatches the envelope and checks its contents.
PACKER
(sneering)
Very funny.
(nods his head)
Just make it quick. You've got ten
minutes tops before the nurses come
through to check their vitals.
Donovan gives him a friendly slap on the arm and walks away.
Dr. Packer watches him leave, a dejected look in his face,
before he turns and walks in the opposite direction.
EXT. FISHING PIER - NIGHT
Anubis shades into frame. The jewel atop his staff pulses
with green light, more frequently than earlier.
He looks up to see an airplane passing over his head in the
sky. When the shadow of the plane reaches him, he shades away
again, blending into the shadow of the plane.
INT. CEDAR SINAI ICU - HALLWAY - NEXT
Donovan slowly walks down the hallway, coughing the whole
way.
He doesn't see a door open in front of him. Pike backs out,
slinging his bag back around his shoulder. They smack right
into each other and collapse in a tangled mess on the ground.
PIKE
(embarrassed)
Oh geez, I'm sorry, dude. I wasn't
looking.
He stops as he gets a good look at Donovan, who is on all
fours violently coughing.
Pike places his hand on his back and leans in towards him.
PIKE
Hey, buddy, you gonna be alright?
DONOVAN
(between coughs)
Yes, son, I'm fine.
(sniffles)
Just...bad asthma.
Pike grabs Donovan by his arm and helps him back to his feet.
He bends back down to pick up both his and Donovan's bag.
Donovan snatches his away and roughly bumps shoulders with
Pike as he walks past him.
Pike looks back at him incredulously.
PIKE
(sarcastic)
You're welcome.
He turns and walks the other way. The frame stays behind him
as he passes through a set of swinging double doors. Behind
him, Donovan is heard coughing again.
Pike is back through the doors before they finish swinging.
PIKE
Hey, dude, I really think you
should get yourself checked-
He stops when he notices Donovan has disappeared.
PIKE
(puzzled)
-out?
With a curious look on his face, he quietly proceeds down the
hall.
EXT. GABRIELLA'S SHOP - NIGHT
Trish's van pulls to a stop in front of the modest looking
occult shop. Gabriella hops out of the van with an empty box
in two and heads for the door when:
FEMALE VOICE
(muffled, echoed, barely
audible)
Gabriella!
Gabriella freezes. She immediately scans the area, looking
for the source of the sound.
FEMALE VOICE
(same muffled effect)
Gabriella!
Gabriella looks suitably wigged out now, her eyes darting
back and forth, trying to find the speaker.
After a moment of panicked looking, she walks backwards to
the front door and lets herself into the shop.
INT. CEDAR SINAI ICU - HALLWAY - NEXT
Pike peers into the window of a door to one of the ICU rooms.
After a moment of searching, he crosses the hall and checks
the opposite door.
Still nothing.
He walks forward and checks the next door up.
INT. CEDAR SINAI ICU - ROOM 19 - NEXT
ON the door. Pike's face is visible through the window. His
eyes widen in shock. PULL AWAY from him until Donovan comes
into the top right of the frame.
He's hovering over an unconscious black man resting in a
hospital bed.
His hand is hovering over the man's chest and a blue stream
of light is flowing between the two.
PAN UP to Donovan's face as he looks up. His features start
to soften, looking younger.
Pike bursts through the door and pulls a gun, aiming at
Donovan.
PIKE
Alright, that's enough.
DONOVAN
(gasping)
Not quite.
He's back to his former youthful self now. He slowly
withdraws his hand and puts one over his chest, catching his
breath.
DONOVAN
(exhales)
Now it is.
Donovan turns to Pike and pulls off his hood. Pike's face
falls for a moment, not expecting to see someone who looks
younger than he is.
He quickly recovers and levels his gun at Donovan again.
PIKE
What'd you do to him?
DONOVAN
Nothing.
Donovan knocks on the patient's head like he's a door.
DONOVAN
He's a turnip. Not much I can do to
him. I just borrowed something he
won't be needing anymore. Think of
it as being an organ donor.
His calm demeanor is almost chilling, given he's got a gun
pointed right at him.
PIKE
Undo whatever it is you just did.
(cocks the chamber)
Right now.
DONOVAN
'Fraid I can't do that.
PIKE
(re: gun)
I got twenty little buddies in here
that say you can.
DONOVAN
(sighs)
Friend, I don't think you realize
what you're involving yourself in.
And point of fact, I have somewhere
important to be. So unless you want
the sky to fall on your head in a
few hours-
PIKE
(fed up)
Now!
Donovan sighs. He's still remarkably collected.
DONOVAN
(blase)
If you insist.
Donovan reaches into his bag and pulls out a small plastic
bag with white sand in it. He scoops out a handful.
DONOVAN
(grinning)
Don't blink. You'll miss it.
Pike watches (and lowers the gun) as Donovan tosses the sand
in the air. A bright flash of white LIGHT blinds him, causing
him to cover up.
PIKE
(pained)
Ah! Dammit!
Donovan rushes him and shoulder tackles him to the ground. He
quickly scrambles to his feet and is out the door.
Pike rolls over to his knees, rubbing his eyes with his
hands.
PIKE
(getting to his feet)
Son of a-
Still blinking, he runs after Donovan...and smacks right into
the closed door, falling back on his ass.
He scampers back to his feet, throws the door open, and takes
off running.
INT. CEDAR SINAI ICU - HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS
Pike skids to a stop in the middle of the hallway. He looks
left, then right, spotting Donovan rounding a corner at the
other end of the hall.
Pike is after him in a flash.
INT. CEDAR SINAI HOSPITAL - PARKING GARAGE - MOMENTS LATER
Donovan bursts out of the door and runs off to his right.
Pike is out the door a few seconds later.
He catches Donovan rounding a corner to a lower level. Pike
starts to give chase, then thinks better of it and instead
runs straight ahead.
CUT TO the lower level where Donovan is fleeing. PULL AWAY to
show the upper level to his left.
Pike appears on top of a truck up there, never breaking
stride as he leaps into the air and crashes into Donovan.
They roll around on the ground until Donovan mounts Pike. He
holds Pike by his neck and punches him in the face three
times.
Before Pike can recover, Donovan scrambles off, crawling away
on his hands and feet.
Pike pounces on him again, knocking them both back down. Pike
yanks up Donovan's head by his hair and slams it down into
the pavement.
Pike stands up, yanks Donovan up, and slams him into the back
of an SUV.
Donovan yelps in pain and his eyes widen when Pike pulls his
gun again and holds it right to his temple.
PIKE
(through gritted teeth)
Hey, buddy. I'm tired. I'm hungry.
Oh yeah and I killed a man earlier
tonight.
(shakes Donovan)
So pissing me off isn't a smart
thing to do at the moment.
He stops as the garage starts to violently shake. Both Pike
and Donovan look around. Dust starts to shake loose from the
ceiling above them.
An EARTHQUAKE.
INT. GABRIELLA'S SHOP - STORAGE ROOM - NEXT
Several glass jars shake off the shelves and shatter upon
impact with the ground. Gabriella has herself braced in the
doorway with one arm, the other holding her (now full) box
under her armpit.
The shelf in front of her starts to tip over. She looks to
her side to see all the others doing the same.
GABRIELLA
(frantic)
No!
She instantly drops the box and thrusts her hands out with a
loud WHOOSH sound.
All the shelves stop toppling over and stand straight up. The
items on them still shake and rattle from the force of the
quake.
Gabriella's arms start to shake as she struggles to maintain
her concentration. Her nose starts to bleed and she starts
panting.
INT. THE CHARON - SERVICE ELEVATOR - NEXT
Spike and Kaia are backed into adjacent corners, both of them
looking terrified, given they're in an elevator in the middle
of a quake.
INT. CEDAR SINAI HOSPITAL - PARKING GARAGE - NEXT
A grinding sound, like a slab of heavy metal being dragged
across cement gets Pike and Donovan to look up.
All the cars on the upper level are slowly being shaken and
bumped over the edge.
Their eyes go wide. Donovan pushes off from Pike.
Pike hangs on to Donovan's coat and bag, but Donovan shrugs
both off and runs.
Pike has to run off in another direction to avoid one of the
upper level cars from crashing on top of him.
He continues running hard as the place starts to come down on
top of him.
INT. GABRIELLA'S SHOP - STORAGE ROOM - NEXT
The earthquake continues. Gabriella is leaning against the
doorway and down on one knee now, still telepathically
holding up the shelves.
Her teeth are gritted, her eyes crackling with yellow energy,
and blood is just oozing out of her nose.
Finally, the quake subsides.
Gabriella pitches forward, catching herself with her hands on
the ground before she face plants. She gasps heavily and
wipes her nose.
EXT. CEDAR SINAI HOSPITAL - MAIN ENTRANCE
Pike stops running and looks back to the parking garage.
Several pieces of the ground have fallen through and there's
a pile of wreckage. A total mess.
He's still holding Donovan's jacket and bag. He tosses them
both in a nearby trash bin. Then he turns around and looks at
his motorcycle, parked on the street.
PIKE
Good thing I parked outside.
He readjusts the bag still slung over his shoulder and heads
for his bike.
INT. THE CHARON - SERVICE ELEVATOR - NEXT
Kaia and Spike warily move back the center of the elevator.
The emergency lights are on in the carriage.
SPIKE
Well, ain't this just lovely?
KAIA
Could be worse. We didn't plummet
to our deaths.
(beat)
Or at least mine. You've got that
get out of 'jail free card' deal
going on.
SPIKE
Love to get an explanation on that
if you wouldn't mind.
KAIA
(incredulous)
Fine time to be asking, don't you
think?
(shakes her head)
And you're barking up the wrong
tree. Gab's the girl you want to
talk to.
Spike nods his head, accepting that answer.
Kaia steps up to the console and presses the emergency help
button. Nothing happens. She presses it again. Still nothing.
KAIA
Damn it.
(looks up)
I'm gonna have to go get help.
She jumps up and catches a latch on the ceiling of the
carriage, yanking it and the panel it's attached to down to
reveal the rest of the elevator shaft above them.
SPIKE
Hang on. Let me put him down and
I'll give you a boost.
KAIA
(shakes her head)
Won't need it.
(sighs; turns to Spike)
Promise not to scream like a little
girl?
SPIKE
(confused)
What?
Spike's jaw drops as Kaia transforms into a werewolf right
before his eyes! She's wearing baggy clothes, so they don't
tear in the change.
SPIKE
(dumbstruck)
That's some wild side.
Kaia nimbly leaps straight up, easily sailing through the
opening. Spike (still holding Connor) walks up under the
opening and looks up through it.
Kaia can be heard scampering up the shaft.
SPIKE
(sniffs the air)
Thought something smelled off about
her.
He looks down at the unconscious Connor, still in his arms.
INT. GABRIELLA'S SHOP - STORAGE ROOM - NEXT
Gabriella is back on her feet, wiping the blood from her nose
with a paper towel. She picks up her box and turns to leave
the room when:
FEMALE VOICE
Gabriella! Help us!
This time the voice is crystal clear and Gabriella's face all
but says she recognized it.
She looks around the room and up at the ceiling, not wanting
to believe it.
GABRIELLA
(shocked)
Gwen?!?
She hurries out of the room.
EXT. GABRIELLA'S SHOP - NEXT
The angle of the frame is off to the side of the wide open
front door. A bright light briefly FLASHES from inside.
Now the entire area is FLASHING through the colors of the
rainbow, like an aurora borealis.
Gabriella steps out the door. Her entire body is a faint blue
and she's partially transparent.
CLOSE UP on Gabriella as she turns her head around to look in
the shop. A normal version of her is standing there,
perfectly still.
She turns back and looks up to the sky, gasping in horror at
what she sees.
ZOOM IN ON the sky. There's thousands upon thousands of
blueish gray colored people in the sky, every single one of
them frozen in place and WAILING at the top of their lungs.
Gabriella covers her mouth with her hand.
The ground starts to shake again, much milder than before.
We ZOOM PAN to:
INT. GABRIELLA'S SHOP - SALES FLOOR - CONTINUOUS
Gabriella (the normal version) gasps and her eyes snap open.
She immediately takes cover in the doorway.
The shaking subsides quickly. Just an aftershock. Gabriella
gasps for air, still taken aback by what she just saw.
She rushes to the center of the room, scoops up her box, and
is out the door.
INT. G&C'S CONDO - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Gabriella stumbles through the door, balancing her box on her
knees.
She drops the box on the coffee table and takes a look around
the room.
GABRIELLA
Where's Connor?
KAIA
In his room, knocked out.
SPIKE
Slept right through the quake and
everything. Hope he's not in a
coma.
Gabriella pauses at that ignorant statement before she bends
over and starts pulling items out of her box. One of those is
the Eye of Anubis.
GABRIELLA
Lesi's barking didn't wake him up?
KAIA
Yeah, about her...
Gabriella stops what she's doing and turns back to Kaia.
KAIA
(sheepish)
Well, you know how she's never
liked me and everything? She was
barking loud enough to wake the
dead, so we had a talk and came to
a little understanding.
Gabriella blinks, not getting it.
INT. GABRIELLA'S BEDROOM - CLOSET - NEXT
LESI, a full grown Scottish terrier, has her four limbs tied
together with shoelace. There's another string around her
mouth. She WHIMPERS.
INT. G&C'S CONDO - LIVING ROOM - NEXT
Gabriella shakes her head and goes back to clearing out her
box.
GABRIELLA
(distracted)
Whatever. There's more important
stuff to deal with right now.
She flips open the book, thumbing through the pages until she
stops on one in particular.
SPIKE
Speaking of important things, how
about some intel on yours truly?
Gabriella doesn't look up from her book as she responds.
GABRIELLA
Make it quick, I'm busy.
Spike picks up the Eye by its chain and dangles it in front
of Gabriella.
SPIKE
How about we start with this?
GABRIELLA
(matter of fact)
It's called the Eye of Anubis.
Wolfram and Hart had it for years.
SPIKE
(fake relief)
Oh, well many thanks. That answers
absolutely nothing!
GABRIELLA
(ignoring him)
The company gave the Eye to Angel
assuming he'd use it to close the
Sunnydale Hellmouth. There was a
tracker on it, so when our techs
knew it was in the Hellmouth, it
was activated.
KAIA
Activated?
GABRIELLA
There's an incantation for the Eye
that makes it absorb the soul
and/or essence of whoever is
wearing it.
(flips a page)
There's another that uses the
energy held within to emit a
powerful energy wave attack.
Spike drops the Eye on the table and leans back on the couch,
crossing his arms. Gabriella pulls out a set of stones from
the box and starts counting them.
SPIKE
Yeah, I got all that firsthand. I
wanna know how I got spat out like
old gum.
GABRIELLA
The Eye completely absorbed your
entire being in the Hellmouth. The
plan was for Angel to have used the
Eye, get absorbed himself, and get
the Eye back to Wolfram and Hart.
SPIKE
Why? By the time he was in
Sunnydale, he'd already signed on
the dotted line.
Gabriella stops her milling about and looks up at Spike,
running her hands through her hair.
GABRIELLA
Because the goal wasn't to get
Angel. It was to get Angelus.
Kaia takes a seat next to Spike as Gabriella continues.
GABRIELLA
When a person the Eye absorbs is
released, it can happen two ways.
Soul or no soul, depending on the
release spell.
SPIKE
(nodding)
So Angel gets vacuumed up and comes
back out without a soul.
The lawyers get Angel to sign on
the dotted line, but Angelus ends
up the big fish.
(beat)
Sneaky little bastards, weren't
they?
Gabriella huffs and goes back to her work.
GABRIELLA
Alright, I think I've got this
healing spell down. We just need
Pike to get here.
She pushes off the table with her hands and gets to her feet,
collecting all her belongings in the box.
SPIKE
Wait, just one more question.
GABRIELLA
(sighs)
Can I answer it in ten words or
less?
SPIKE
Probably, but you don't strike me
as the type who would if she could.
GABRIELLA
(exasperated)
What is it?
SPIKE
Dying ain't exactly a pleasant
experience. So having it happen
over and over again is a tad bit
irritating.
(beat; frustrated)
So why can it keep happening? I
didn't notice either of you birds
chanting to pop me back out.
GABRIELLA
(throwing her hands up)
I don't know. My guess is that it's
full.
SPIKE
So I was what? A burp? A bloody
hiccup?
GABRIELLA
I drew Connor's soul into it to
save his life. Child of two vamps.
Reincarnated ancient warrior.
SPIKE
So I get tossed out like old pizza.
Well, ain't that just wonderful?
GABRIELLA
Anything else?
SPIKE
Well, actually-
Gabriella instantly cuts him off.
GABRIELLA
No? Great! Back to things that
actually matter.
She stalks off towards Connor's room. Spike pops up off the
couch and calls after her.
SPIKE
Oi! I'm not finished yet. You
didn't explain the whole Casper
thing!
Gabriella ignores him and slams the door behind herself.
SPIKE
(still yelling)
And what about the flashy box?
Kaia looks to him, utterly lost.
KAIA
Flashy box?
SPIKE
(sighs and crosses his
arms)
Nevermind.
Kaia shrugs her shoulders and heads for Connor's room. Spike
soon follows.
