FADE IN.
INT. UNKNOWN LOCATION - NIGHT
ON a red digital projection of the time (3:15am) rapidly
flickering on the wall next to a window. That and the
moonlight from the nearby window are the only sources of
light.
A low, rapid beeping is the only audible sound.
PAN ACROSS the room to a full size bed.
The blankets fly off the bed to reveal an average sized blond
man in his early twenties with heavy bags under his eyes.
This is DONOVAN KEITH.
DONOVAN
(blearily)
What?!?
He looks to the bedroom door and his eyes widen. Apparently
he knows what the beeping is.
DONOVAN
(shocked)
Oh my...
He hops out of bed and dashes out of his room into:
INT. DONOVAN'S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
The beeping is louder. It's coming from this room.
Donovan sprints across the room, running up and over his
couch, and slides to a stop in front of his large computer
set up.
Donovan frantically punches in commands. The beeping stops
and a window opens on the monitor with a map of the world.
Red dots are sporadically placed all over the image.
He punches in a few more commands and the map zooms in on
California. There's a massive collection of dots over one
location, which gets double clicked and zoomed in on.
His eyes go wide again and he dashes over to his window. Over
his shoulder we can see the LOS ANGELES SKYLINE in the
distance.
Donovan stands there for a moment, his eyes focused on the
night sky.
After a beat, he goes back to the computer and punches in
another sequence.
The time heading on the program changes to read 2:15am. Now
the nucleus of dots is much denser.
Donovan goes back further to 11:30pm and there are hardly any
dots. He presses a 'play' icon off to the right.
A real time playback shows red dots suddenly increasing in
number all over the city. A counter on the top left goes from
less than a hundred to several million in seconds.
The dots then funnel into one specific place and disappear.
The number drops back to but a few.
After a beat, they all reappear again, dispersing all over
the city and rapidly disappearing, leave the original large
collection. The final counter reads 11,376.
The number drops to 11,364.
DONOVAN
(in awe)
Oh my God.
A SERIES of shots shows Donovan throwing on some clothes,
stuffing belongings into a small bookbag, gelling his hair,
and messing with the computer.
With the bag slung over his shoulder, he takes one final look
out the window before leaving his apartment, letting the door
slam behind him.
INT. PIKE'S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
CONNOR is on Pike's bed in a seated position with GABRIELLA
HERON sitting next to him. On his other side are KAIA SINCAID
and OLIVER PIKE, the latter of whom is aiming a gun off
screen.
PULL BACK to reveal a naked SPIKE sitting up on the floor
looking up over his shoulder at all of them. He squints while
looking around the room, unfamiliar with the surroundings.
PIKE
(nods to Spike)
Hey, naked guy, you wanna explain
why your bare ass is streaking up
my freshly waxed floor?
SPIKE
Where...where am I? What is this
place?
Gabriella squints at Spike, almost as if she recognizes him.
Before she can make the connection, Connor starts violently
coughing.
PIKE
(shakes his head)
On second thought, I don't care.
Pike picks up a spare blanket from the edge of the bed and
strides over to Spike.
Spike turns away and starts to get to his feet (the framing
thankfully hiding his special places). Pike tackles him to
the ground, wrapping him up in the blanket.
SPIKE
Oi!
PIKE
(struggling to hold Spike)
Naked men have no business in my
house!
Pike yanks him to his feet. The two men tussle with Pike
surprisingly gaining the upper hand. The blanket constricts
Spike's range of motion.
As they tussle, Gabriella tenderly pushes Connor back down on
the bed and dabs his forehead with a damp cloth. He coughs up
a small amount of blood.
GABRIELLA
It's okay, just rest. We'll get you
fixed up.
Connor turns to his side away from everyone else as he
continues to cough.
Gabriella looks back to Kaia, who shares her worried
expression.
PIKE
Kaia!
Kaia and Gabriella both jump. Kaia turns around to look at
Pike and Spike's wrestling match.
PIKE
Can you get the door?
SPIKE
(straining)
Do you know who you're dealing with
here? I'm Spike!
Gabriella's eyes go wide, finally realizing who he is.
GABRIELLA
(questioning)
Spike?
Kaia glances at Gabriella before dashing across the room and
opening the door.
Pike roughly throws Spike out into the hallway.
SPIKE
(rolling around; fighting
the blanket)
Don't you know your bloody vampire
history, boy?
PIKE
(shocked and angry)
Vampire?!?
Pike instantly drops down to one knee.
CLOSE UP of his ankle as he pulls up the pants leg, revealing
a gun clip taped around his sock. He yanks it free and stands
back up.
Spike tosses the blanket off, gets to his feet, and charges
back towards Pike (who is loading the new clip) and Kaia.
Both of them jump back, but Spike is repelled by an invisible
force at the doorway.
PIKE
(cocks the gun)
Didn't invite you, jackass.
Pike aims the gun right at Spike's chest. Spike just stands
there with his hand on his hips, giving Pike a clear shot.
SPIKE
(smirking)
Oh, you really are a thick one if
you think-
BANG.
A wide eyed Spike gets about a split second to put it all
together before he DUSTS.
Pike scoffs and slams the door shut.
The Eye of Anubis begins to GLOW. An explosion of brown dust
erupts from it, quickly solidifying to form Spike again.
He looks around again, completely bewildered. He and Pike
lock eyes.
PIKE
The hell?
SPIKE
The hell?
Pike takes aim again. Spike holds his hands up in frantic
protest.
SPIKE
(exclaiming)
Now wait just a-
BANG. He's dust again.
Five seconds later, he's back out of the Eye once more.
PIKE
(frustrated)
Christ!
(beat; to himself)
Maybe if I chop his head off...
GABRIELLA
Pike, stop!
All heads in the room (except Connor) turn to Gabriella. She
looks at Spike curiously.
GABRIELLA
(to Spike; softly)
I thought you were dead.
(beat)
Are you a ghost again?
SPIKE
Yeah, I'm a spook. That's why your
bouncer of a boyfriend over there
just tossed me.
He turns to Pike and holds up a finger in a questioning
gesture.
SPIKE
And since when can guns dust
vampires?
PIKE
(cocks the gun)
Want another firsthand
demonstration?
GABRIELLA
(holds her hand up)
Pike, it's okay.
(beat)
He's harmless.
At this point, it's noticeable that the non vampires in the
room are making it a point to keep their eyes away from
Spike's privates.
GABRIELLA
(to Pike; re: Spike)
Think you can loan him some
clothes?
Kaia and Spike share a look. Spike raises his eyebrows in
that flirtatious fashion he's known for.
PIKE
(crosses his arms)
Hell. No.
GABRIELLA
Pike, just trust me on this, okay?
Pike huffs and crosses the room to a large standalone closet.
He starts to rummage through it.
KAIA
(to Gabriella)
So...friend of yours?
GABRIELLA
(sighs)
His name's Spike. He is-
(blinks)
-was an ally of Connor's father.
Spike registers that connection and look down to the bed at
Connor, who has rolled over so he's facing everyone again.
SPIKE
Yeah, I remember meeting him.
(beat; realizing)
Overly large forehead. Permanent
scowl.
(sniffs the air)
And that scent...
He starts to chuckle and shake his head.
SPIKE
(grinning)
Well, I'll be damned! Ol' Gramps
managed to hit a bullseye. Dunno
how I missed it last time.
Gabriella holds up her hand to cut him off.
GABRIELLA
And we can sit on a rug in a circle
and have story time later.
(points back to Connor)
We need to help him. Plus do
something about the whole...
(motions up and down Spike
with her hand)
...naked thing.
Kaia shoots Gabriella a complaining look.
KAIA
I dunno. Can't say I'm complaining.
Pike crosses the room again and roughly shoves some clothes
into Spike's arms.
PIKE
(to Kaia; disgusted)
Hey, you wanna quit oogling the
undead?
KAIA
(crosses her arms)
Jealous?
Pike mouths 'ha ha' at her.
Spike holds out the clothes, a pair of golf shorts and a
yellow and white plaid polo. He looks suitably nonplussed.
SPIKE
Got anything in black or red?
PIKE
Nothing I'd let you wear, given I'm
gonna burn the outfit when you're
done with it.
SPIKE
(muttering)
Should've been burned a long time
ago.
Gabriella holds up both of her hands to silence the rambling.
GABRIELLA
That's enough! Pike, can you see if
Trish will loan us her van again?
PIKE
(checks his watch)
She's gonna be pissed I'm waking
her up.
GABRIELLA
(exasperated)
Just go.
PIKE
(backs away)
I'm going, I'm going.
And he's gone, letting the door shut behind him.
Spike's still standing there, holding the horrid outfit. He
looks to Kaia and sighs.
EXT. APARTMENT COMPLEX - ROOFTOP - NIGHT
PUSH IN on a small door just as it opens to reveal an out of
breath Donovan. He dashes to the edge of the roof while
pulling a small mixing bowl from his bookbag.
Looking over his shoulder, we see the Los Angeles skyline
some distance away. He's on the outskirts of town.
He hastily mixes several more items from his bookbag (herbs,
dust, stones) into the bowl, finishing the mixture with an
amber liquid he pours from a small flask.
Finally, he lights a match and drops it in, lighting the
ingredients on fire. It slowly begins emitting red SMOKE.
Donovan raises his arms out to his sides and starts to chant
under his breath.
As he chants, the smoke continually gets thicker as it rises,
forming a solid red pillar that shoots towards the Los
Angeles skyline.
Donovan lowers his arm and watches as the smoke reaches the
city and spreads out across the sky. When it has spread out
enough to blanket the entire city, it flashes white and
disappears.
Donovan smirks, admiring his work, before he suddenly doubles
in pain, clutching his stomach.
He groans and turns away from the edge, falling to his butt
and over on his side.
He starts hyperventilating as he digs into his pocket and
pulls out a cell phone.
His unsteady fingers can barely operate the phone, but he
manages to call someone and get the phone to his ear.
DONOVAN
(into phone, shaky)
Dr. Robert Packer, please.
(beat)
Tell him it's an emergency with one
of his patients. Hurry!
He sits up, starting to relax his breathing and regain his
composure.
DONOVAN
(beat)
It's me.
(violently coughs)
Yes. Right now.
(beat)
I don't care how much clean up
you're doing. This is-
(beat)
Fine, double the normal rate. I'm
on my way over right now.
He hangs up before he gets a response and painfully gets to
his feet. Still clutching his stomach, he steals one last
glance at the Los Angeles skyline before leaving the roof.
INT. PIKE'S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Pike enters the front door and tosses a set of keys to
Gabriella, who catches them in one hand and nods her thanks.
She's standing in front of Pike's bed, where Connor seems to
be sleeping comfortably.
GABRIELLA
(claps her hands)
Alright, here's the deal. Pike, I
need you to swing by Cedar's and
pick up some supplies.
PIKE
(to himself)
Need to start charging you gas
money.
GABRIELLA
(rolls her eyes)
I'll write you a post dated check.
Spike (dressed in the aforementioned golf outfit) nudges
Kaia's shoulder and leans over to whisper:
SPIKE
I like her already.
GABRIELLA
(turns to Kaia)
Kaia, I need you to take Connor
back to our place. Take the service
elevator in the back dock so noone
sees you.
KAIA
How am I going to get in?
GABRIELLA
My purse is still in your car.
There's a mag card in it.
Kaia nods and walks past Gabriella to the bed. The two ladies
gently start removing the linens off Connor.
Behind them, Spike raises his hand like a student in class.
SPIKE
Uh, beg your pardon, but what about
me?
PIKE
(leering at Spike)
What about you?
Kaia looks back to Spike and Pike.
KAIA
(off Connor)
Well, I could use some help lifting
him when we get to the Charon. He's
heavier than he looks.
SPIKE
(nodding)
Right. He is family and all.
Gabriella steps aside to let Spike get in a good position to
lift Connor into his arms.
As he lifts him, Gabriella jerks her hands out under Connor,
making sure he's steady.
Connor stirs, but doesn't wake up.
GABRIELLA
Hey, be careful!
Spike gives her a sideways grin.
SPIKE
You sure you're not his mum? What
happened to him anyway?
KAIA
("sing song")
Internal injuries. Cursed soul
throttling him. Long story.
She and Spike start across the room.
SPIKE
(scoffs)
Par for the course with this
bloodline.
KAIA
(opening the door)
I'm starting to learn that.
They leave. Gabriella, her arms crossed against her chest,
slowly steps over to Pike and sighs.
Her expression turns from worried to confused in about two
beats. She looks off to the side.
PIKE
(noticing her look)
Don't worry. We'll get him patched
up.
GABRIELLA
(distracted)
It's not that.
PIKE
What is it then?
GABRIELLA
I dunno. Something in the air. I
just now felt it.
PIKE
(nods)
Thought he smelled a little ripe.
GABRIELLA
(exasperated)
Not Spike. The air feels...heavy
somehow.
(shakes her head)
Forget it. We need to get going.
She starts to walk off when Pike holds his arm out to stop
her.
PIKE
So, uh, you sure it's a good idea
to leave a prone Connor with the
two of us most likely to eat him?
GABRIELLA
(not in the mood)
Don't be a jerk.
She walks out of frame, leaving Pike standing there with a
blank expression.
PIKE
(shrugs)
I'm just saying...
We follow him as he walks out the door and shuts it behind
him.
INT. UNKNOWN LOCATION - DAY
The frame is completely BLACK.
A ragged WHEEZING sound, not unlike a person's dying gasps
echoes in the room. A CLANGING sound joins it.
A small hole appears from which white light streaks in.
Several more holes of light are created until the entire wall
collapses, revealing two MINERS.
Their faces are concealed with gas masks and goggles. They
step into the room and shine flashlights on their new
surroundings.
It's an Egyptian tomb. Judging by the cobwebs that blanket
everything, it's been awhile since anyone has been here.
The wheezing continues as the miners try to find its source.
Both of the lights stop on a standing SARCOPHAGUS at the far
end of the room.
The front of the sarcophagus is solid gold and molded into a
humanoid form with a canine head and an Egyptian pharaoh's
crown.
The miners slowly approach it, drawing GUNS for protection.
They get right up on it when the sarcophagus begins to GLOW.
The miners immediately jump back and aim their guns right at
it. The glowing subsides.
ON the left side of the sarcophagus. Several elaborate LOCKS
going up the seam unlock on their own.
The front slowly swings open and a creature falls out of it,
landing on all fours.
Its entire body is sucked in like an anorexic teenager,
showing the outlines of the skeleton underneath the thin
layer of brown, wrinkled skin.
The creature's head resembles the head of the sarcophagus
lid, a dog's face with an elongated snout and yellow eyes.
This is ANUBIS.
Anubis looks up as the beams of the miner's flashlight dance
all over his face. He wheezes and slowly pushing himself up
to his feet.
MINER 1
(terrified)
Anpu! Anpu!
They open fire. Anubis reels from the gunshots, but doesn't
go down. Instead, he merely growls, seemingly more annoyed at
the gunfire than anything else.
Both of the miners slowly back away from Anubis, who gives
them a curious sideways glance. They turn and run.
Behind them, Anubis's body turns completely black and
flattens to a two dimensional form. He dashes off to the
side, into the shadows of the tomb.
The miners are darting for their entrance, but Anubis lands
from the ceiling in front of them. His black, flat body
returns to its original form.
Editor's note: For brevity's sake, we'll call this movement
'shading'
The miners back away again, shaking their heads.
In the blink of an eye, Anubis has them both by their
throats. He picks them up with no effort whatsoever.
The miners' limbs flail helplessly in the air. Anubis draws
in a deep breath and blows out a thick black smoke.
The miners scream in pain and terror, their face still
concealed by their masks.
After about ten seconds, they both go still. Anubis loosens
his grips. Both of their bodies slide down out of Anubis's
hands. His hands prevent their masks and goggles from staying
on.
Both bodies hit the ground, their faces revealed now. Their
eyes are completely black, with wrinkled skin all over their
faces. Their hair is grey. They look like very old, decrepit
men.
He steps to the center of the tomb, scanning his
surroundings. His eyes fall on a three foot long golden staff
topped with large green crystal.
He picks it up and the crystal starts to pulsate, bathing the
room in green light. Anubis does another sweep of the room
before GROWLING and shading away.
FLASH CUT TO:
EXT. CITY STREET - NIGHT
Through the rear driver-side window of Kaia's Honda Accord,
we see Connor restfully somewhat peacefully in the back seat.
A HORN blares as we PAN UP to Kaia pounding her car horn,
futilely trying to get the traffic to move.
She slumps back in her seat and sighs. Spike is in the
passenger seat next to her, looking back at Connor.
SPIKE
So, you lot stop the evil witch
doctor, your boy put him down, undo
the voodoo, and now Private
Forehead back there doesn't have a
soul?
KAIA
That's the long and short of it,
yeah.
(beat)
And he's not my boy.
SPIKE
(turns back around)
My nose says different. He's all
over you, luv.
KAIA
(to herself; bitter)
He used to be.
SPIKE
What changed then?
KAIA
(sighs)
Let's just say he got a taste of my
wild side and didn't like what he
saw.
SPIKE
Funny. Didn't strike me as much of
a prude. A trifle oafish, maybe.
KAIA
(changes the subject)
So what's your story?
(off Spike's look)
Gabriella told me once the last
time anyone saw Connor's dad was in
some alley with his friends against
a demon army. Were you there for
that?
Spike sighs, not wanting to get into this. He crosses his
arms and looks out his window.
SPIKE
It's a long story. You got a
century?
KAIA
If we stay stuck in this traffic
long enough...
Spike nods, accepting that answer. He's still staring out of
his window.
SPIKE
I don't remember much.
We WHITE OUT TO:
EXT. HYPERION - ALLEY (FLASHBACK)
Fade in on a familiar alley in the middle of a stormy night.
Spike stands alongside CHARLES GUNN, ILLYRIA, and ANGEL
himself.
A soft symphonic piece plays over the scene, muting the
sounds of the action.
SPIKE (V.O.)
We started with more, but by the
time we got to that alley, there
were only four of us left.
FLASH CUT TO the other end of the alley, showing a horde of
advancing demons, weapons raised.
FLASH back to the remnants of the Fang Gang as Angel steps
forward into frame.
SPIKE (V.O.)
Angel steps up...
Angel mouths something we don't hear.
SPIKE (V.O.)
...says some overexaggerated heroic
line. Don't remember what it was,
storm was pretty loud.
(beat)
Then it began.
Angel swings his sword, blocking the attack of the first
incoming enemy.
FLASH CUT TO a few moments later. We're in Spike's POV now.
There are demons everywhere, taking up all of the frame.
Spike cuts several of them down with his sword, taking
several blows along the way.
SPIKE (V.O.)
Rest of it's mostly a blur. Nothing
but blades, claws, fangs, blood.
All the ingredients for a good
brawl.
The camera shakes, rotates, and swivels as Spike remains
firmly entrenched in the battle. Every new twist and angle
just reveals more demons.
SPIKE (V.O.)
I lost sight of the others pretty
quickly. Couldn't keep up on
account of fighting for my life and
all. Then I heard Angel's voice in
the distance, calling my name.
Turn to the sky as a DRAGON starts to swoop down. Angel is
faintly visible on its back.
SPIKE (V.O.)
Couldn't believe my eyes, but he
was actually trying to slay the
dragon.
(beat)
He told me to get out of the way.
Tried to warn me.
The dragon grows ever closer and its mouth opens.
SPIKE
He was a hair too late.
The dragon breathes a mouthful of FIRE that engulfs the
scream. The music drops out as Spike is heard SCREAMING.
