FADE IN:
INT. TEMPLE - NIGHT
An overhead shot looks down on a circle of cloaked hooded
figures laying out your generic occult items: bones,
talismans, etc. We PAN DOWN to ground level as one of the
hooded figures turns away from the circle and walks to a
figure standing in a doorway hidden by shadows.
The hooded one removes their hood to reveal a beautiful dark
haired WOMAN in her late twenties.
WOMAN
The preparations are complete, sir.
Should we begin?
A LAWYER steps from the shadows. He rotates his neck to the
tune of several audible pops.
LAWYER
Please do.
The woman turns to walk away.
LAWYER
They're not quite complete though.
You're missing one little
ingredient.
The lawyer turns to the doorway as a couple of suited goons
drag in a YOUNG GIRL, who is trying to pull away as hard as
she can.
LAWYER
One of the mages mentioned the
necessity of a virgin's blood.
The young woman looks at the little girl as she is forced
into the middle of a circle of mages, then back to the
lawyer.
LAWYER
Oh and you wouldn't believe how
hard it is to find a teenaged girl
in this town who's still a virgin.
Kids these days.
The lawyer pulls out a jagged knife and holds it out to the
woman.
LAWYER
If you would be so kind.
The woman takes the knife. She's clearly conflicted on this,
repeatedly looking back and forth at the now crying girl and
the knife.
LAWYER
Is there a problem?
Her decision made, the woman drops the knife and brushes past
the lawyer's shoulder as she walks out. One of the goons
from earlier starts after her, but the lawyer holds out an
arm to stop him.
LAWYER
Let her go. Never thought she had
the stomach for it anyway.
The lawyer picks up the knife as the goon leaves and tosses
it to another mage.
LAWYER
(nodding to the other
mages)
Get started.
Close in on the lawyer as the sound of a knife penetrating
flesh is heard followed by the gurgling last gasps of the
young girl.
LAWYER
(muttering)
Ick. Well, I was hungry.
Off that sad scene, we:
FADE OUT.
EXT. REILLY RESIDENCE - NIGHT
We FADE IN on CONNOR standing at the front door of his
surrogate family's home. LAWRENCE REILLY is standing in the
doorway blocking the way in.
LAWRENCE
(yelling)
For the last time, I don't know who
the hell you are or what you're
trying to pull, so get off my
property before I call the cops!
Lawrence abruptly slams the door. Connor stands there for a
beat looking massively confused.
CONNOR
Huh.
Off his bewildered expression, we:
SMASH CUT TO:
INT. STARBUCKS COFFEE HOUSE - LATER
Connor is sitting in a chair with a coffee cup in his hand.
There are several empty cups on the table in front of him.
One of the employees is busily sweeping up around him.
CONNOR
So then he tells me that he doesn't
know who I am and slams the door in
my face. My own father. I mean
what the hell?
(looks at empty cup)
Let me get another one.
EMPLOYEE
Sorry, bro. Gonna have to cut you
off.
CONNOR
(incredulous)
Cut me off? This isn't a bar.
EMPLOYEE
Yeah, and I'm not a bartender.
You've been here for three hours.
It's beyond closing time.
(points his thumb behind
himself)
You gotta go, man.
CONNOR
(dejected)
Right. Sorry.
Connor gets up to starts to leave, when the employee holds
his hand out to stop him.
EMPLOYEE
Hey man, you want me to call you a
cab?
CONNOR
Yeah, that'd be nice. Thanks.
FADE TO:
INT. CAB - MOMENTS LATER
Connor fastens his seat belt. The driver turns around to
meet his eyes.
DRIVER
Where we headed, buddy?
CONNOR
Hotel.
DRIVER
Which one? There's a Super 8 a
couples blocks from here. Or the
Red Roof-
CONNOR
I don't care. Whichever is the
closest to here.
(beat)
Preferably cheap.
DRIVER
You got it.
The driver turns his meter on and pulls into traffic. Connor
checks his wallet and pulls out a twenty. It's the only
money he has.
CONNOR
(muttering to himself)
Maybe a homeless shelter.
Connor turns and looks out the window thoughtfully, trying to
get a grip on the events of the night. He lets out a sigh
and leans his head back against the seat.
CONNOR
(to himself)
Can this night get any worse?
Out of nowhere, a van SMASHES head on into the front of the
cab. The driver is hit with his airbag and Connor hits his
head on the passenger seat in front of him.
He takes a minute to compose himself and checks the pulse of
the driver. Feeling a weak pulse, he lets out a sigh of
relief.
Then he notices half a dozen VAMPIRES jumping out of the back
of the van. A dozen more are riding up on motorcycles,
hooting and brandishing an array of weapons.
CONNOR
I deserved that.
Another vampire rushes up and smashes Connor's window with a
baseball bat. Connor shields himself from the glass, then
braces himself on his hands and KICKS the door off of its
hinges!
The door slams into his assailant, knocking him down. In one
swift motion, Connor plants his hands on the roof of the cab
and:
EXT. CITY STREET - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
Connor flips himself onto it. Taking stock of the situation,
he quickly counts eighteen vampires closing in on him.
He jumps down to the driver's side, yanking the door open and
dragging the driver out. Wrapping one of the driver's arms
around his neck, Connor takes off running with the vamps in
hot pursuit.
The driver groggily comes around as Connor half drags him
away from their attackers.
CONNOR
Hey buddy, you okay? Can you walk?
DRIVER
(groggily)
What happened?
CONNOR
Never mind that. We're being
chased. Can you walk?
DRIVER
(groggily)
I think so.
Connor releases the driver, who takes two steps and promptly
falls on his face.
CONNOR
(rolls his eyes)
Deserved that one too.
He picks up the driver and slaps him across the face. This
fully wakes the driver up and he looks back to see the
pursuing vampires. After a YELL of fear, he takes off
running down an alley. Connor follows to:
EXT. ALLEY - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
Connor and the driver are running as fast as they can. They
come to a fifteen foot fence and Connor, without breaking
stride, LEAPS halfway up and scurries over. He takes off in
a sprint when he hears the driver yelling.
DRIVER
Hey! Hey kid! Come back! I need
a lift!
Connor turns to see the driver struggling to get up the
fence. He starts to go back and stops when he sees the
vampires bearing down on the driver.
As Connor watches, they drag him kicking and screaming to the
ground and sink their fangs in. With a look of remorse,
Connor slowly takes two steps backwards, then turns and runs
away to:
EXT. CITY STREET - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
Just as Connor exits the alley, a motorcycle turns and
smashes into his legs. He rolls to a stop in front of a
little shop. The vampire turns in the middle of the street
and screeches towards him.
Connor braces himself, then launches a mid roundhouse kick to
the headlight of the bike. The bike stops with the force of
the blow and the vampire is sent sailing over the handlebars
and through the window of the store.
He picks up a baseball bat the vampire was carrying and
breaks it over his knee. Then he turns to see another
vampire coming right at him.
Connor gets a running start and leaps forward, landing on the
tire cover of another motorcycle that was coming towards him.
He jumps forward again and THRUSTS the jagged end of the
broken bat into the heart of the vampire.
The vampire goes flying off the bike and dusts in midair.
The bike falls on its side and grinds to a halt several feet
away.
Connor starts to run over to the fallen bike, hoping to make
a getaway when a SUV screeches to a stop in front of him. A
YOUNG WOMAN opens the passenger side door.
YOUNG WOMAN
Get in. Quickly.
Connor considers his options and hops into the passenger
seat. The car screeches away and we:
CUT TO:
INT. CAR - NIGHT
Connor takes a minute to size up his rescuer. She's a slim,
attractive woman in her late twenties with flowing black
hair. The same woman from the ceremony earlier. This is
GABRIELLA HERON.
GABRIELLA
Are you hurt?
CONNOR
What?
GABRIELLA
Are you hurt? Are you injured?
There's a first aid kit under your
seat.
CONNOR
I'm fine. Thanks. Not that I
don't appreciate the save, but who-
GABRIELLA
My name is Gabriella Heron. I work
for Wolfram and Hart. Well, I-
CONNOR
Pull over.
GABRIELLA
'Cuse me?
CONNOR
Pull over right now and let me out.
GABRIELLA
(indignant)
I just saved your ass back there.
Can I at least get a minute to-
CONNOR
I'd rather take my chances with the
vamps.
GABRIELLA
I understand your concern for my
former employers...
CONNOR
Former?
GABRIELLA
(pointing ahead of the
car)
...but can we talk about this after
we get past the Hells Angels?
There's a line of four vampires on three motorcycles in front
of them, revving their engines. Connor looks with a worried
expression to Gabriella, who has her eyes closed and is
CHANTING softly in Latin.
CONNOR
Really don't think prayer's going
to get us out of this one.
GABRIELLA
(opening her eyes)
Buckle up.
CONNOR
You can't be serious.
GABRIELLA
Suit yourself.
Gabriella floors the gas, screeching towards the vampires.
They take off towards her. It's a game of chicken. Connor
looks terrified while Gabriella is as calm as can be.
Connor yells in fright as two of the vamps ram right into the
car...only to be met with a FLASH of blue light. The
motorcycles stop as if smashing into a brick wall and the
vampires fly off them, landing hard on the ground.
CONNOR
(looking back in shock)
What? How? What?
Gabriella blows imaginary dust off her fingers and wipes them
on her shirt.
GABRIELLA
Neat huh?
(looks in the rear mirror)
Oh crap.
Connor turns around just in time to see the third motorcycle
closing on them. The passenger vampire leaps off the bike
onto the back on the car. He rears back and smashes his fist
through the window.
GABRIELLA
There's a stake in the glove
compartment!
Connor quickly whips out the stake and hops in the backseat
to confront their intruder. The vampire overpowers him and
shifts into the backseat of the car.
The vampire still riding the motorcycle comes up on their
side and smashes the window with a chain.
Connor is on his back grappling with the vampire, trying to
strike with the stake. He finally STAKES the vampire and
simultaneously kicks it out of the rear passenger side
window.
The dust of the vampire flies into the face of the remaining
vampire. Blinded, the vampire VEERS off to the side of the
road and smashes into a car.
CONNOR
(looking back)
Ouch. So what the hell do they
want with me?
GABRIELLA
You're a hot commodity among the
underworld, Connor.
(turns down a side street)
Human child of two vampires born
with a soul. A lot of people and
other things are interested.
CONNOR
Would you be one of those other
things?
(off her look)
I've been jerked around by almost
everyone I've ever met in my life.
Excuse the hell out of me for being
a little paranoid.
(beat)
If I'm such hot stuff, how come
nobody's come after me until now?
GABRIELLA
Look I'll be more than happy to
answer all your questions after we
get to my place.
CONNOR
(wry)
But we just met.
The sound from the top of the car startles both of them. The
torso of a vampire appears in the front windshield and
punches the glass.
Connor quickly opens the back hatch of the car and makes his
way to the top of the car.
EXT. CAR - NIGHT
Connor pulls the vampire up and they stand on the roof of the
car in fighting poses, the vampire snarling, Connor smirking.
They sway briefly, the speed and motion of the car throwing
them off balance.
The vampire throws one punch, which Connor sidesteps,
catching the arm and using the momentum to HIP TOSS the
vampire off the car to the ground.
Connor looks back at his handiwork and sees one more biker
gaining on them. He looks forward to see more of them
bearing down about a hundred yards away.
He slides into the front seat of the car through the
passenger side window.
INT. CAR - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
CONNOR
Can you do that flashy wall thingy
again?
GABRIELLA
Not for awhile. Takes a lot out of
me.
CONNOR
Got anymore tricks? Maybe we can
outrun them.
GABRIELLA
(pointing to the emblem on
the steering wheel)
This is a Geo Tracker. I've seen
go karts with more speed.
CONNOR
(beat)
Don't suppose you have a sword on
hand?
GABRIELLA
Underneath the cover in the back
with the spare tire.
CONNOR
(while getting the sword
out)
Aren't we thorough?
GABRIELLA
Thorough would be a sub machine
gun.
CONNOR
Not a fan of guns. They're almost
unsportsmanlike.
GABRIELLA
So this is a game to you now?
CONNOR
(sizing up the sword in
his hand)
Most fun I've had in years. Beats
mini golf with the fraternity.
(beat)
Okay, I want you to speed towards
the guys ahead of us, but slow
enough that the one behind us can
catch up.
GABRIELLA
What?
CONNOR
Trust me.
Gabriella starts to speed up. The bikers behind her snarl,
twirling various weapons in their hands as they near the
vehicle.
GABRIELLA
What's the plan?
CONNOR
Something I saw in a movie once.
(off her look)
Trust me. When I say so, slam on
the brakes and do a 180.
Gabriella doesn't look like she's buying into the plan, but
she nods in agreement anyway and maintains her speed. Connor
slides his upper body out of the window, maintaining his
balance by holding onto the window sill.
CONNOR
Wait for it.
(beat)
Wait.
(beat; yells)
NOW!
Gabriella slams on the brakes.
SLOW MOTION.
The car veers up on two wheels as she yanks it into a hard
left turn into the bikers that were behind them.
Connor steadies himself, then whips out the sword and beheads
the vampire that was pursuing them from behind. The now
driverless motorcycle skids on its side past their car and
smashes into the other bikers.
END SLOW MOTION.
Gabriella pulls off in the opposite direction. Now it's her
turn to look impressed.
GABRIELLA
Uhm...damn.
CONNOR
(wiping the sword off with
his sleeve)
And they say television rots the
brain.
Off Gabriella's bemused expression, we:
FADE OUT.
INT. KITCHEN - GABRIELLA'S HOUSE - NIGHT
FADE IN on Gabriella and Connor entering a fairly spacious
kitchen. Gabriella casually tosses her keys on the kitchen
counter and stretches her arms out. Connor is shifting from
side to side, obviously on edge.
GABRIELLA
Relax. I have warding spells
guarding my house. Anyone who
isn't a high level sorcerer won't
be able to track you while you're
in here.
Connor looks a little more at ease at that bit of news, but
he's still wary of Gabriella herself.
Gabriella walks over to the kitchen table and pulls out a
chair, gesturing for Connor to sit down.
Connor takes a minute to take in his surroundings. It's a
pretty nice place, but all of the walls are noticeably empty.
No decorations of any kind.
GABRIELLA
Please have a seat. We have a lot
to talk about.
Connor slowly sits down, never taking his eyes off her.
GABRIELLA
Can I get you something to drink?
CONNOR
(speaking very quickly)
No thanks. Who the hell are you?
How'd you know where to find me?
And what happened with that
kamikaze drive earlier?
GABRIELLA
(fixing a glass of water)
I already told you my name,
standard locator spell, and barrier
spell. In that order. Got any
other questions?
CONNOR
(indignant)
Yes.
(beat; to himself)
Just let me figure out what they
are.
Gabriella chuckles to herself and takes a seat.
GABRIELLA
You're probably wondering what I
meant about Wolfram and Hart
earlier.
CONNOR
Among other things.
GABRIELLA
I used to work for their magic
department. Been trained since I
was a little girl.
CONNOR
Used to? Why don't you work for
them now?
GABRIELLA
(beat)
We had a difference of opinion.
CONNOR
That's not much of an answer.
GABRIELLA
It's all you're getting for now.
CONNOR
(beat)
Back to my earlier question then.
If everyone wants some, why haven't
they come after me until now?
GABRIELLA
In addition to the spell that
placed you with the Reillys,
Wolfram and Hart set up wards to
block anyone or anything from
tracking your scent, your aura,
anything that could be used to hunt
you down. We're...they're very
thorough.
CONNOR
How do you know so much about all
this?
GABRIELLA
Because I'm one of the people who
helped engineer the spell.
Connor sits back and crosses his arms. He clearly didn't
like hearing that little tidbit. Gabriella ignores his
demeanor.
GABRIELLA
With the spell in place and
holding, not even someone as
powerful as Cyvus Vail could get
around the safeguards to hunt you
down.
CONNOR
So Vail didn't send those vamps
from earlier?
GABRIELLA
Doubtful. He's dead.
Connor takes a minute to let that bit of news sink in.
CONNOR
Why doesn't my family know who I
am?
Gabriella takes a deep gulp of her water. She doesn't really
want to answer this one.
GABRIELLA
After your father, I mean Angel-
CONNOR
You had it right the first time.
GABRIELLA
Shortly after he and his friends
destroyed the Circle of the Black
Thorn, an emergency meeting of all
the sorcerers on the payroll was
called. We were to completely void
the mystical elements of his
contract, including the changes we
made to you and the memory spell.
CONNOR
So why am I still the same way I
was before?
GABRIELLA
The walking boy scout? The spell
was broken on you before through
the Orlon Window.
CONNOR
The who window?
GABRIELLA
It was a conduit for the spell. It
got smashed when you were busy
beheading Sahjahn. Restored all
your memories, but left the spell
intact.
CONNOR
(leans forward)
So you were involved with this new
spell too.
GABRIELLA
No, I refused to help cast it. As
soon as I learned the specifics, I
walked and came looking for you.
CONNOR
Why? I understand not wanting to
do a spell, but why help me
directly?
GABRIELLA
I have my reasons.
CONNOR
More cryptic B.S.
(leans back in his chair)
Wonderful.
(beat)
So since you seem to know so much
about me, how about throwing a
little info my way?
GABRIELLA
(nods)
Fair enough.
CONNOR
Why did you refuse to do the spell?
GABRIELLA
Why do you want to know that?
CONNOR
First off, you dodged the question
a couple times already. You worked
for Wolfram and Hart for awhile
right?
GABRIELLA
About a year now.
CONNOR
Yeah, so I'm guessing you've done
some shady things already. Why
walk away now?
GABRIELLA
(looks down at the table)
The spell to undo the contract
required the sacrifice of a young
girl.
(looks back up)
I couldn't bring myself to do that.
Can you imagine doing that?
It's Connor's turn to admire the fine place mats on the
table. He can't meet Gabriella's eyes, obviously reminiscing
on his own dark past.
CONNOR
Yeah. Yeah I can.
(looks up)
Hey, I'm beat. Mind if I crash for
the night?
GABRIELLA
Not at all. Spare bedroom is
upstairs. Second door on the
right.
Without another word, Connor pushes away from the table and
leaves the room. Gabriella absentmindedly rubs her thumbs
over her glass of water. Off her we:
